Visit with them under "game conditions" to see if they're the type of people you'd like to be associated with. Watch and see if potential teammates seem to welcome your child or not.

Ask about the make-up of a team, too. Generally speaking, it's easier to join a team accustomed to adding new players and families each year as opposed to one where everyone has been together for years.
